The CIRANO report “Le lien entre les compétences en numératie et les rendements sur le marché du travail au Québec” has just been made available online.
Written by Chair co-holder Raquel Fonseca with Marie Mélanie Fontaine and Catherine Haeck, this report examines the relationship between numeracy skills measured in adulthood and worker compensation in Quebec.
The results suggest in particular that a one standard deviation increase in numeracy skills, for active workers in the Quebec population, is associated with an average 21% increase in wages, a figure slightly higher than that estimated for the rest of Canada. The results also suggest that disparities in numeracy skills between men and women can explain a significant portion of the gender wage gap.
